Woodgerd crossed paths with Wake outside the entrance. They walked together across the plaza, Woodgerd headed to the presidential palace, Wake to his hotel.

“What did the Vatican’s man want?” asked Woodgerd.

“The same as everyone else. He wanted to know if I know what’s happening.”

“Well, for a squid that didn’t even attend the navy’s charm school at Annapolis, it’s amazing how sought after you’ve become in the space of a single evening, Peter.”

“I was just delivering a message.”

“Ah, yes. And that makes you a very popular messenger.”

Thinking about Woodgerd’s assessment, he thought about Vargas’s warning about the Chileans and the shadowy men in Panama. Hoping he wasn’t getting too fearful, Wake opted not to continue walking the six blocks back to his hotel in the dark. Lima wasn’t a safe place in the best of times. He’d hail a taxi on the other side of the plaza.

“Popular might not be the right word, Mike. I just hope no one around here decides to shoot the messenger.”
